On a Personal Note: My Daughter the Superstar

Well, it happened. The FedEx man brought our first two volumes of Baby Signing Time (sign language DVDs for hearing children 0-3 years old).

Those of you who have been subscribers since June of this year know that in June, my two-year-old daughter and I went to Signing Time Camp for a day. The camera crews were there, trying to film more clips for their upcoming volumes of Signing Time and Baby Signing Time. They were especially interested in capturing infants and toddlers using signs, so they attempted to film my daughter and other little ones playing and signing. Well, try as they might, they couldn’t get her to use the signs that she’s known since she was a year old. I guess she was feeling a little intimidated by the huge camera lens that was six inches from her face (can’t blame her much, huh?).

So with trepidation, she and I sat down to watch our new DVDs. We popped in Volume 1. It was very cute and enjoyable, and she loved it even though she already knew all the signs. We saw lots of adorable kids, but no daughter. On to Volume 2… and as we were watching the first signing song about clothes, there she was! She was only on the screen for about two seconds, but there was my little girl, signing “shoes” for the camera. I rewound it for her, paused it, and said, “Who’s that?” A look of recognition passed over her face, and she said, “me!” We had my husband’s family over for dinner on Sunday, and I put it on for everyone… and every time we saw the clip she yelled, “Me!” in this delightful, loud, growly voice.

It’s been a very exciting week at our house.

Feature Article: If You’re Not Failing, You’re Not Succeeding

On my flight home from Pittsburgh at the end of July, I read an article in American Way Magazine by Samuel Greengard, a freelance writer. His article about celebrating failure really got me thinking. What does it mean to celebrate failure? Why do we tend to avoid failure at all costs, or if it happens, to put it behind us as quickly as possible? As I’ve thought more about it, I’ve come to the conclusion that if we’re not failing at all, it’s not really possible to reach our full potential.

Failure Can Lead to Breakthrough

Lack of failure usually means that we’re not taking risks. Taking risks

One of my clients mentioned Wikipedia to me the other day. He had just discovered it, and although I have used Wikipedia for quite some time, I realized that I’d never recommended it to my readers!

Wikipedia is a free source online encyclopedia. It has over 1,000,000 articles in many languages on different topics, linking to each other by hyperlinking terms within articles. There are over 700,000 English articles, and approximately 1500 English articles are added every single day… and 5000 per day over the entire project.
