Are you an opera aficionado?

I’m headed to the opera, and I’m very excited. If you have been to the movie theatre recently, you may know that the Metropolitan Opera is trying something new – live broadcasts to select movie theatres in the United States. Events are scheduled through April 2007.

In addition to some of the classics, a world premiere of The First Emperor by Tan Dun will be shown on January 13, with Placido Domingo playing the lead. Tan Dun composed the score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero, and this is his first opera. And I read in the newspaper that this is Placido Domingo’s first world premiere for The Met!

Or, if you’ve ever sung along to the Looney Tunes version, maybe you’d enjoy Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville… Figaro, anyone?)! Mozart’s The Magic Flute is even scheduled for an encore performance.

Enjoy the opera!
